For example a given keyword i.e. “design” is very broad and although traffic stats may look good it will include a mass of benign visits. where as “designer” may have less volume but is far more likely to convert.
Obviously this is a simplified example to emphasise the point that someone searching for a “designer” is more likely to have a more immediate need over someone searching “design”. The moral being do not waste money on benign keywords and learn from the practical experience.
